Empowering Haiti’s Most Vulnerable Youth

In 2015, over 300 disadvantaged students in Haiti graduated with certificates in Hospitality endorsed by the Ministry of Education. The program participants received the training through the well-known Haitian vocational institute, IDEJEN. Diageo has worked with IDEJEN on Learning for Life™ programs in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) and Youth Build International, a non-governmental organization based in the United States. The graduation took place in the capital city of Port-au-Prince, and was attended by senior government officials from the Ministry of Education, Tourism, Youth and Sports, as well as the Minister of Social Affairs.

Learning for Life™ launched its first program in Haiti in 2009 and since then more than 3,000 young Haitians have benefitted from new skills and training and have gone on to get jobs in the hospitality sector across the country. Many of these individuals have helped to rebuild the country after the 2010 earthquake, and many others provide customer service to the guests staying in the many new hotels built in Haiti following the earthquake. Learning for Life™ will continue to expand in Haiti with the hope of reaching thousands of more young people in order help them build a better life.

“I want to thank Learning for Life for giving the youth of Haiti a chance to study now and for everything it continues to do in education.” -Frantzy Joseph, Graduate, Haiti
