Learning for Life™ launches in South Africa Just in Time for World Class
The unemployment rate in South Africa reached a ten-year high of 26.40 percent in the first quarter of 2015, according to a report by Statistics South Africa. Historical data shows that the country has always had high unemployment.
Learning for Life™ and Ketel One Vodka recognized this challenge and decided to do something about it. A partnership with Ketel One allowed the disadvantaged youth of Alexandra Township, one of the poorest urban areas in the country, to participate in the first Learning or Life program in South Africa. Twenty-five talented and motivated young adults were chosen for a five-week intensive hospitality training and received certificates across different areas.
As part of their program experience, trainees had the unique opportunity to be part, first-hand, of a final extensive training by top global bartenders and previous winners of Diageo’s annual Global World Class Bartender Awards, which were held in Johannesburg in 2015.
Bob Nolet, 11th generation distiller of Ketel One, said, “What we wanted was to offer the opportunity to these young students to become a bartender, a profession that is growing everywhere, and it’s no different here in South Africa. This training allows them to become true professionals, inspired and prepared to go far beyond in their careers and consequently have a better future in their lives. “
